If you
look at the New Testament you will notice that Paul’s approach to reaching
people was different depending on who he was speaking to. For example, in Act 28:23 when Paul was
speaking to the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks he used one kind of approach,
yet when he was speaking to the polytheists in Acts 17 he used another
kind. In Acts 28 Paul merely showed
that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies written about
him. He did that because they already
accepted the idea of a monotheistic God (common ground between Paul and these
listeners). They also already accepted
the authority of the O.T. and had some ideas about the Messiah (more common
ground), though their picture of the Messiah was distorted.

Yet in
Acts 17:23-31 when Paul was speaking to polytheist who did not accept the Old
Testament and a belief in a monotheistic God, he used another approach to
begin with. He started with talking
about the unknown God that they worshiped and used that to talk about the
characteristics of the Christian God who made the universe. Here Paul used the belief between himself
and his listeners of Creation being the work of “a” powerful divine being as
common ground.
